Delegator set for Irish 2,000 Guineas

Brian Meehan’s Delegator is likely to be a late confirmation for this weekend’s running of the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Beaten by half a length by Sea the Stars in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas, Delegator was originally scheduled to skip the Irish Classic in favour of a tilt at one of the feature races at the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

However, Meehan has told reporters that Delegator’s fitness and form following the English Guineas has convinced him that Delegator deserves the opportunity to show what he can do at the Curragh.

“Delegator has taken the Guineas very well and we would have to say that he is very likely to head for the Curragh, provided the ground is good,” Meehan told the Liverpool Echo.

“In addition to the fact he is in such good form, we have to consider that the Royal Ascot ground could get quite firm. We could find ourselves with no place to go if we wait for the middle of June and then find conditions don’t suit.”

Meehan is also considering entering Super Sleuth, who finished third in the English 1,000 Guineas, in the Irish equivalent this weekend.
