Delegator takes aim at Irish Guineas
Thoroughbred trainer Brian Meechan is aiming his beaten 2,000 Guineas star, Delegator, at the Irish equivalent at Curragh next month.
Delegator, the antepost favourite for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, was soundly beaten by Sea the Stars in the first of the season’s Classics, and will now be given a second chance to strut his stuff in the Irish Classics.
Meehan had initially planned to rest his horse during the Irish leg of the Guineas, and had instead plotted an outing in the St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting in June.
“Delegator has taken the Guineas very well and we would have to say that he is very likely to head for the Curragh, provided the ground is good,” Meehan said on his official website. “In addition to the fact he is in such good form, we have to consider that the Royal Ascot ground could get quite firm.
“We could find ourselves with no place to go if we wait for the middle of June and then find conditions don’t suit.”
