2008 Irish 2000 Guineas
The Irish 2000 Guineas – counterpart to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket – is one of the five Irish Classic races, which also include the Irish versions of the 1000 Guineas, St Leger, Oaks and Derby races.
The Irish 2000 Guineas is a Group 1 flat race for three-year-old thoroughbreds run over a distance of one mile. The race is run each year in May at the Curragh, which hosts all five of the Irish Classics. For interesting facts about the history of racing at the Curragh, see Irish 2000 Guineas history.
It’s not unusual for horses that run the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket – due to be raced on 3 May in 2008 – also to run the Irish 2000 Guineas later in the month. In recent times horses such as Don’t Forget Me, Tirol, Rodrigo De Triano and Rock Of Gibraltar have all completed doubles, winning both of the 2000 Guineas races. Last year saw another double, with Cockney Rebel winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the 2007 Irish 2000 Guineas.
